My name is Suleyman Cabir Ataman. I write about coding and beyond in this blog.

I was born in Malatya, East Turkey. I started coding with the QBasic classes we took at high school in year 1997. I literally fell in love with coding from this early age. Then I came across a book about Fortran and started studying it. After spending some time with Fortran, my older brother -who was studying Electronics and Communication Engineering at the time, advised me to learn C instead of Fortran. From that point on, my life took a break. During my high school years, I had an extraordinary interest and curiosity towards programming and it became one of my two passions along with music. Since then, I studied and coded in a lot of different languages including C, C++, PHP, Visual Basic, Java, J#, C#, D, JavaScript, Python, TypeScript, Go, Scala at least and some others that I forgot to mention probably.

After graduating from high school, I got admitted to the department of Management Information Systems at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul). I entered with a nation-wide ranking (238th among 1.5 million students) and earned a merit based scholarship. I had the opportunity to take courses from distinctive professors about computer science and other related subjects. I also started working as a software developer when I was a student. I have started delivering software professionally when I was 19. During my carrier, I took part in hundreds of small, medium and large-scale projects.

I enjoy learning new programming languages and I try things on as many different platforms as I can. In short, programming is more than a profession for me, it is also a passion, a hobby. I enjoy learning and working on projects for myself. I have started coding in C# just after it has been invented. I am also proficient in JavaScript, Python and Java. Except coding, I like to learn and work with the related concepts like front-end frameworks, DevOps, Testing, CI/CD and cloud. Nowadays, I am also enthusiastic about using Gen AI assisted coding, and my goal is to make Gen AI write perfect code. You can check my GitHub account for projects I have open-sourced.

I am also into music. I play baglama (or saz), oud, guitar and a few other musical instruments. I research music and its theory, as well. Specifically, I research and write about Classical Turkish/Ottoman Music. In addition to my Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, I have a Masters Degree in Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music MA program, and a PhD Degree in the Musicology and Music Theory doctorate program.

Except coding and music, I am curious about history, philosophy, sociology and linguistics. I currently live in London, and work at Sky UK. I am married and have a son.

I have another blog where I write about anything (but in Turkish): http://defter.suleyman.uk
